History

In 1949 in a Burmese military outpost, a young Nathan Clark, serving with the West African Brigade, creates the very first Clarks Original - the Desert Boot. Its inspiration is a crepe-soled boot made from rough suede in Cairo's fabled Old Bazar and favored by off-duty British army officers. Nathan launched them at the Chicago Shoe Fair the following year. The Clarks Desert Boot was greeted with great interest. The Fashion Editor of Esquire magazine gave them substantial editorial credits, and large volume sales followed. In 1965 Lance Clark agreed to promote them in Europe. Overnight the name 'Clarks' became a household word. An icon was born worldwide.
