The Novation Twitch takes a new approach to Digital DJing, dropping the traditional jog wheels in favour of touchstrips and a multitude of trigger buttons. The mixer section is familiar but it is the FX and Slicing section of the DJ controller where the fun is to be had. Beats can be sliced and played back live making your sets more of a live performance. The touchstrips are used for navigation of tracks either by swiping (for cueing) or dropping (to certain points within the track).
Slicer mode on the Novation Twitch consists of 2 banks of 8 pads where samples can be chopped and re-triggered across a variation of loop lengths and cue points. All alterations you make can be saved so if you stumble across a cool section you have sliced, you can use it again in other sets.
Twitch FX are controlled using the FX section and can be strapped across either channel or the master. Fader FX mode ropes in the channel faders to control some of the FX parameters (while the volume is kept constant).
Serato ITCH comes bundled with the Twitch (now you see why they called it Novation Twitch!?) and is super stable and easy to operate. Performance tools within ITCH combined with the designated controls on the Twitch is where this combination comes into its own and treads new paths when it comes to Digital DJing and Controllerism.
Althought the Novation Twitch is tailored for Serato ITCH, it can be used with any of the major softwares including Ableton Live
(Using Twitch Live Translator) and Traktor. Mappings are available for Traktor PRO 2 in both 2 and 4 deck mode and there is an overlay for the Twitch included in the box.
The interface is a 2 in 4 out USB affair and the Twitch has a mic input for vocals and FX can also be added to the channel. There is a second stereo input with a gain for iPods or any other external source you wish to run through the unit.
The Novation Twitch is notably sturdier than most other DJ controllers in the same range and solid to the touch. This is due to the aluminium top giving it more of a professional feel and convincing durability. It is still quite light though and it`s compact size make it perfect for portability and use in tight DJ booths. Speaking of DJ booths, the buttons and rotary controls are backlit so if it`s dark and dingy in there, you can still see what you are doing. The Twitch is also powered via USB so no need for external power supplies.
As well as the array of performance capabilities on offer, the Novation Twitch can still be used for straight up mixing. Just drag your tracks in and mix away. For those of you still hesitant about the lack of jog wheels, ask yourself, with sync options and cue points, do you really need them any more? Obviously this is more aimed at DJs who aren`t looking to scratch but looking to keep the mixing simple and concentrate on doing live alterations to their sets making them all the more unique.
